Ancient Bonfires Night in Karklė: Celebrating Traditions and European Cooperation
On August 30th, everyone is invited to Ancient Bonfires Night - a traditional coastal celebration on the beach of Karklė, Lithuania. The initiative comes from the Directorate of Protected Areas of Lithuania Minor, which has played a leading role in reviving this meaningful tradition that brings coastal communities together.
Also known as the Bonfire Convocation, this tradition began in 1992 in Finland and has spread across the Baltic Sea region, with symbolic bonfires creating a visual representation of connection and solidarity. Today, it is a symbol of unity among Baltic nations and a moment for communities to gather and celebrate shared heritage.
This year, the event is dedicated to the Interreg Cooperation Day and the 35th anniversary of Interreg, the European Union’s cooperation programme that has fostered strong partnerships across borders. Interreg South Baltic will participate, highlighting the importance of cross-border cooperation and regional identity.
Earlier, visitors are invited to the Karklė community festival “Menkinė” at the Seaside Regional Park Visitor Centre, featuring activities for all ages and the “Honorable Amber Fisherman Award” ceremony, honoring contributions to amber culture.
As evening falls, the symbolic bonfires will light the Baltic coastline, reminding us that the flame that once warned now welcomes.
We invite you to gather by the fire—to experience living tradition, celebrate 35 years of European cooperation, and share a moment of unity by the sea, by the fire.
