One Ingredient, Three Countries: Apple Detectives

What can children discover about something as familiar as an apple when they look at it like detectives?

To celebrate Interreg Cooperation Day 2026, Daugavpils University is inviting children aged 7–10 to become Apple Detectives and explore a familiar everyday food from a completely new perspective.

Through playful detective-style challenges, children will search for clues, observe, compare and discover how much there is to notice about an apple. They will be encouraged to look beyond first impressions, describe what they discover and, if they wish, take part in a tasting activity.

The event is organised within Project No. #S040 “Educational Food Innovation for Healthier Habits and a Greener Baltic Sea Region” (EDUFOOD BSR). The project supports schools and municipalities in making school food services more child-centred, sustainable and responsive to pupils’ needs. By adapting and piloting the SAPERE sensory education method, EDUFOOD BSR helps children explore food through curiosity, their senses and voluntary tasting, while strengthening cooperation between teachers, school catering staff and municipalities.

In the longer term, the project aims to improve children’s acceptance of healthier school meals, reduce food waste and provide practical, transferable tools that schools and municipalities across the Baltic Sea Region can use in their everyday work.

The Apple Detectives event brings this approach to life in a playful way. By turning a familiar food into something to investigate, compare and discover, the activity encourages children to approach food with curiosity rather than assumptions or pressure.

The event has been developed and will be led by Daugavpils University, with contributions from EDUFOOD BSR project partners in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Their contributions will help bring the cross-border dimension of the project into the children’s experience.

Through one familiar ingredient, children will therefore encounter not only a new way of exploring food, but also a simple and tangible example of cross-border cooperation — how people from different countries can share experiences, learn from one another and create something together.
