70% of Interreg funding allocated, State of Interreg 2025 report shows
The figures highlight how Interreg programmes are moving further into the implementation phase of the current programming cycle. After several years focused on launching calls and selecting projects, many are now supporting delivery and cooperation activities on the ground. This reflects the natural progression of the seven-year programming period, as attention shifts from allocating funds to ensuring that projects deliver tangible results.
Fewer calls ahead for applicants
For organisations interested in Interreg funding, the report indicates that opportunities for new applications are becoming more limited as programmes move towards the final stages of their calls. At the same time, thousands of projects are now underway, addressing shared challenges across borders and regions in areas such as innovation, climate adaptation, mobility and social inclusion.
The report also underlines the growing importance of programme evaluation and monitoring indicators in the coming years. As projects advance, programmes will increasingly focus on assessing results, demonstrating the added value of cooperation and identifying successful approaches that can be transferred or scaled up across regions.
With implementation accelerating across programmes, 2026 is expected to be a key year for Interreg. Alongside ongoing project delivery and final calls, programmes are also beginning to reflect on lessons from the current period and the future of territorial cooperation beyond 2027.
The report offers a snapshot of how European territorial cooperation is progressing midway through the programming period.
