Transnational cooperation brings new opportunities for women in forestry and migrant entrepreneurs in Germany
Vibrant communities, natural landscapes, and cultural diversity are among Europe’s greatest assets. Yet, challenges such as underrepresentation in critical sectors and barriers to integration often prevent these strengths from reaching their full potential. Projects like Fem4Forest, funded by Interreg Danube Region and SEE ME IN, funded by Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE, address these issues by empowering women in forestry and supporting migrant entrepreneurs, proving how inclusive initiatives can enrich local communities and strengthen the central European and Danube regions.
Regional cooperation is more than a policy; it is a story of transformation, empowerment, and inclusion. In Germany, achievements of these two projects illustrate the impact of working beyond borders to address pressing societal challenges. From Bavaria's forests to Freiburg's streets, these projects highlight how collaboration can empower individuals, bridge cultural gaps, and foster sustainable development.
Empowering women in Germany’s forests
In Bavaria’s forested landscapes, women are breaking barriers in forestry through initiatives like Fem4Forest, a project empowering female forest owners. Forester Johanna Gierl has led the charge with her ‘Forest Walks for Women,’ where monthly sessions explore topics like sustainable timber harvesting and climate change.
‘Women want a say in forest management and need knowledge to do so,’ Johanna explains. Her initiative has sparked lasting change, with participants stepping into leadership roles and forming a growing network of empowered women. As Johanna returns to her district in 2025, the seeds of inclusion she’s planted continue to thrive.
Promoting inclusion in Freiburg’s kitchens
In Freiburg, the SEE ME IN project supports migrant entrepreneurs like Omar, a Syrian chef who turned his passion for food into a thriving business. With access to training, mentoring, and local connections through the project’s Intercultural Hub, Omar launched a catering service and food truck that is now a staple of the local culinary scene.
‘Thanks to this support, I’ve been able to thrive and inspire others,’ Omar shares. Over three years, SEE ME IN has helped 168 migrant businesses across central Europe, proving that collaboration can transform lives and enrich communities.
Projects like Fem4Forest and SEE ME IN demonstrate Germany’s leadership in tackling societal challenges through cross-border collaboration. By addressing underrepresentation in forestry and supporting migrant entrepreneurs, these initiatives foster inclusion and strengthen communities.
Whether empowering women with forest walks or mentoring migrant chefs in culinary hubs, Germany showcases the transformative power of cooperation. As Johanna expands her network and Omar continues to share his culture through food, their stories inspire a shared vision of inclusive and sustainable growth.
