Enhance joint crisis management and spatial planning with Resilient Borders

The Resilient Borders initiative, launched by the European Commission and jointly managed by the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) and the Mission Opérationnelle Transfrontalière (MOT), offers funding for 20 pilot actions to create joint cross-border plans for crisis management and spatial planning. Public entities and cross-border structures from EU border regions and neighboring EFTA countries can apply until 30 November 2024 to receive up to €40,000 in funding. The selected projects will be implemented in 2025, promoting innovative collaborations to strengthen border regions.

Enhancing Interreg involvement

The initiative is valuable for those already involved with Interreg. Resilient Borders can serve as an “incubator” for new project ideas or further develop intentions that can later be integrated structurally within an Interreg project. It can also be a concluding step to an Interreg project, offering an opportunity to take initiatives further.

Online Info Session

An online information session will take place on 30 October 2024 to guide applicants through the process. Ricardo Ferreira from the European Commission, along with representatives from AEBR and MOT, will provide insights on filling out the application form and finding information on cross-border spatial planning and crisis management. The session will be held via Zoom from 11:30 to 12:30 CET. Interested participants must register in advance here.

Previous research

Resilient Borders builds upon two significant publications by the European Commission:

  • Strengthening the resilience of EU border regions. Mapping risks & crisis management tools and identifying gaps, published in 2024, which can be accessed here.
  • Cross-border Governance Framework and Tool by the OECD and the European Commission, accessible here.

These resources offer crucial examples and insights for developing cross-border plans to manage crises and implement spatial planning measures.
