Interreg NEXT MED at UN Climate Conference COP29: Mediterranean cooperation for climate action
Interreg NEXT MED, one of our 86 Interreg programmes, will contribute to climate resilience across the Mediterranean by participating in COP29, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11-22, 2024.
This presence underscores the achievement of having Mediterranean cooperation represented at one of the most influential climate events worldwide, reflecting the essential role Interreg plays in fostering sustainable solutions and transnational cooperation.
The COP, or Conference of the Parties, is an annual forum organised under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), dedicated to addressing global climate challenges. With this year’s theme, Together for a Change, COP29 creates a space for Interreg NEXT MED to bring Mediterranean climate issues to the forefront and introduce funding opportunities that advance climate action across the region.
A key aspect of Interreg NEXT MED’s participation will be the launch of an €83 million call for green transition projects by the end of the year. This call invites eligible partners to develop innovative, low-carbon solutions aimed at enhancing climate adaptation and resilience in areas such as energy, water management, disaster prevention, green transformation in SMEs, as well as in innovation, education and policy development; with a special focus on youth-led projects.
Interreg NEXT MED’s presence at COP29 not only reinforces the critical role of international cooperation in tackling climate challenges but also celebrates the collective commitment to creating a sustainable future for the Mediterranean.
